Though this may be unrelated to this board topic, I was looking for feedback on the truck bed dump unit that Northern Hydralics sells. Does anyone have experience with this? Use and / or installation? How is the gas filler and bumper handled? Is it dependable? I have a 1996 F350 4x4 SRW.

Steve, one of my employees installed a similar unit in his truck two years ago, while the concept is a good idea, the box is not engineered to with stand that sort of use. He had to replace his box after one season because all the spot welds were letting go. I don't know your intended use, he has a small firewood business on the side to pay for his 'toys'. As for the filler neck, etc., the bumper stays (on some versions the bumper tilts with the box) and the filler gets a support arm so it stays in place while the box tips up and away. For not a lot more money you can get a slide-in unit (which is what he did, he made it in my shop in one week-end using what was left of his kit) which will by far better, especially for things like topsoil which like to stick to the bed anyways. One of these,I think Country Manuf. or Millcreek make trailers for Northern Hydraulics. I'd check out a local manufacture so you see/specify what you want. If you are going to "dump" stuff out, get something that elevates to 60 degree angle or so and the fulfrum is way back so the end of the trailer doesn't hit the ground- it's suprising what it takes to get thing to slide out. Manurer can be slick to the heel but stick to the bed! ....

I have one on my '89 Chevy tonner. Murf is right, the hoist will lift more than the box can stand. I saw that coming and built a subframe out of 2" angle that spreads the load out over the full width of the bed, and over three transverse ribs instead of the two the kit is designed for. With that mod, no problems at all, love it, won't ever be without a dump bed again. I mounted the electric-hydraulic unit behind the seat to keep it out of the weather, and I drilled and tapped the pivots on the scissors lift for grease zerks. It's been a joy, best money I ever spent. ....

The bed insert looks nice. I have looked at these before but seemed a little pricey as I recall. I will follow up with this manufacturer. Thanks! The note about reinforcing the load under the bed sounds like a good workable solution. As far as my use, I'll be moving things around on my property (Fill,Stumps) and be able to limit the load on the sides by making more trips. This truck may eventually be a yard truck running an Ag plate as I expect it will suffer from my training on the hoe... ....
